The Basque culture offers us in December 2024 a wide variety of events for Christmas lovers and those who are not so fond of it. We close a year dedicated to the Basque artists Eduardo Chillida and Néstor Basterretxea.
Christmas brings back its most typical events: Nativity scenes, illuminated cities, New Year’s Eve parties, Ice rinks (Bilbao, Irún, Vitoria-Gasteiz and Zalla), Craft Markets, San Silvestre Races (the one in Beasain is the most international), among others. I suggest you don’t miss the events that in my opinion give the Basque Christmas the most identity: the Olentzero (the Santa Claus of the Basques), the Santo Tomás Fair (popular festival) and the Durango Fair. From the Durango Book and Basque Record Fair in 1965, it has become the showcase of Basque culture in all its range of proposals.
Other key events in Basque culture in December are the International Day of Euskera (the Basque language) and Saint Francis Xavier (both on the 3rd). The Academy of the Basque Language and the Society of Basque Studies are founded (on the 22nd). On December 31st we commemorate the 135th anniversary of the birth of José Miguel Barandiaran, patriarch of Basque culture. The Basque composers Sebastián Iradier (La Paloma), Maurice Ravel (Ravel Concerto) and Barandiaran himself die in December.
Three important events in the history of the Basques are commemorated:
- 45 years since the return from exile of the Basque president Leizaola. After the departure of the Basque government in the Civil War in 1936.
- the UN approves the Universal Declaration of Human Rights on December 10th. Its main drafter was René Cassin, a Basque jurist from Bayonne.
- John Adams (2nd President of the USA) and his son John Quincy Adams (6th President) landed in El Ferrol (Galicia) on December 8, 1779 (245 years in 2024). They celebrated the New Year in O Cebrerio. In January 1780 they traveled and spent the night in Basque lands on their way to Paris.
The best proposals that Basque culture offers for December 2024, which I have selected for you according to my criteria, are:
